Fixing mistakes and the date checks

Undo and redo any change, and learn what Asal Ku checks for you so impossible dates never get into your tree.

⏱ 8 minutes🎯 Beginner

In this lesson you will learn

  • How Undo and Redo work, and when they stop working
  • Which dates and relationships Asal Ku will refuse to save, and why
  • What the yellow "Saved. Please double-check" notice means

Undo and Redo

Everything you do in edit mode can be taken back. The bottom bar shows Undo, Done and Redo.

After adding Layla, Undo becomes available at the bottom left

When does Undo stop working?

Undo is kept for one editing session: from pressing Edit Node until you press Done. Your undo history is kept even if you sign out and in again during that session. After Done it is gone, so check your work before you finish.

Dates that Asal Ku will not save

Family trees are easy to get wrong by accident: a typo in a year, a child entered under the wrong parent. So Asal Ku checks every change. If a change would make the tree impossible, it is refused and you are told exactly why.

Asal Ku refuses…Example
A date that is not a real date, or is outside 1000 to today1965-02-30, or a year such as 3021
A birth, death or marriage date in the futureA death date next month
Death before birthBorn 1990-05-10, died 1990-05-09
A child older than a parentChild born 2020, parent born 2025
A child born after the mother diedMother died 1989-12-31, child born 1990-01-01 (birth children only)
A marriage before a spouse was born, or after a spouse diedMarriage in 1955 for someone born in 1960
A couple of two men or two womenAsal Ku only accepts a couple of one man and one woman
A person who is their own parent, or a loop in the ancestryGrandfather linked as his own grandson

Dates are compared as precisely as you have entered them. If you only know a year for one person, Asal Ku never accuses you of a mistake within that same year.

What to do when a change is refused

Read the message. It names the people and the dates. Usually one date is a typo. Open the details of the right person (lesson 6), correct it, and try again. Nothing was changed by the refused attempt.

Things that are unlikely, but possible

Some findings are not impossible, only unusual. For these, Asal Ku saves your change and then shows a yellow notice asking you to double-check.

"Saved. Please double-check": two parents who would have been very young
"Saved. Please double-check": two parents who would have been very young
You get a notice if…Example
A parent was under 14 when the child was bornParent born 1975, child born 1987
A mother was over 55, or a father over 80Mother born 1920, child born 1985
A child was born long after the father diedMore than about ten months
Someone would have lived over 110 yearsOr is over 110 and not marked as having died
Brothers or sisters born only months apartTwins born within days are fine
A spouse was under 15 at the weddingMarriage date much earlier than expected

If the notice is a surprise, correct the date. If it is true (families surprise us), ignore the notice. Nothing is blocked.

Foster, adopted and step children

The age rules for parents (young, old, died before birth) apply to birth children only. Adopted, foster and step children are not held to them. A child can never be older than a parent, whatever the relationship.

Try it yourself

  1. In your Practice Tree press Edit Node and add a person. Press Undo. They disappear. Press Redo. They return.
  2. Give a child a birth date earlier than a parent's. Read the message Asal Ku shows.
  3. Fix the date and save again.

Remember

  • Undo and Redo last until you press Done.
  • Impossible dates are refused with an explanation. Unlikely ones are saved with a notice.
  • A year alone never triggers a false alarm in the same year.
