Learn Asal Ku, one small step at a time
This guide takes you from "I have never used it" to confident. No experience needed: every lesson starts from the beginning, shows exactly where to tap, and has screenshots so you always know you are in the right place.
Go through the lessons in order, from 1 to 12. Each one takes about 5 to 15 minutes. At the end of every lesson there is a short Try it yourself exercise. You can mark a lesson as done and this page remembers it on your device (you have marked 0 so far).
The 12 lessons
Before you begin
What Asal Ku is, what you need, and the handful of words that make everything else easy.
2Signing in and finding your way around
Sign in, add Asal Ku to your phone, and learn what every button on the main screens does.
3Your list of trees
Find, search, pin and create trees, and understand every symbol on a tree card.
4Looking at a tree
Open a tree, understand how people and lines are drawn, move around, and see the tree from anyone's point of view.
5Building your tree
Add parents, partners, children and brothers or sisters, link people who are already in the tree, and remove them again.
6Details, dates and photos of a person
Edit a person's name, dates, photo and extra details, and use your voice instead of typing.
7Fixing mistakes and the date checks
Undo and redo any change, and learn what Asal Ku checks for you so impossible dates never get into your tree.
8Pictures, audio and video
Give every person a gallery of photos, voice recordings and videos, browse them all together as Memories, and keep an eye on your storage.
9Sharing a tree with relatives
Give relatives a link or QR code, choose whether they can only look or also help, and understand what they will see.
10Connecting trees into a forest
Join your tree to a relative's tree through a person you have in common, and choose exactly what each family can see of the other.
11Birthdays and anniversaries
See birthdays, wedding anniversaries and remembrance days on a calendar, choose what to show, and add them to your phone with reminders.
12Your profile and settings
Change the language, set up fingerprint sign-in, choose what you show other families, manage storage and tips, and know what works offline.
Who is this guide for?
- Complete beginners. If you can use a phone or a web browser, you can follow this guide.
- Family helpers. If you were invited to help build a family tree, lessons 1 to 6 are what you need.
- Organisers. If you look after the tree for the whole family, also read lessons 8 to 10 (pictures, sharing and connecting trees).
Two things to know before you start
- The family in the screenshots is made up. Hassan, Zainab, Aisha and the others are not real people. You can safely copy every exercise with your own family.
- Phone or computer, it is the same app. Most screenshots are from a phone because that is how most people use it. Where the computer is different, the lesson says so and shows a computer screenshot.
